Differences and benefit of Cleansing Oil, Cleansing Balm and Micellar Water

Posted by Socheata V on

In the previous article, we have discussed deeply about double cleansing. Double cleansing is important but choosing the right cleanser is more significant. We would like to introduce three main cleansers for our skin. They are cleansing oil, cleansing balm, and micellar water. These are all popular makeup removal and skincare products, each with distinct characteristics. Undoubtedly, we are going to differentiate these three products within their texture, function, skin types, and usage.

Cleansing Oil
Texture:
Typically lightweight oils (e.g., jojoba, olive, or grapeseed) that turn into a milky emulsion when mixed with water.
Function: Effectively dissolves makeup, sunscreen, and impurities, lifting them away from the skin's surface.
Skin Type: Suitable for various skin types, including dry and sensitive skin.
Usage: Applied to dry skin, massaged to break down makeup, and emulsified with water before rinsing.

Cleansing Balm
Texture:
Solid, buttery or waxy consistency that melts into an oil upon contact with the skin.
Function: Excellent at breaking down and removing makeup and impurities.
Skin Type: Suitable for various skin types, often beneficial for dry skin
Usage: Applied to dry skin, massaged to dissolve makeup, and emulsified with water or wiped away with a cloth.

Micellar Water
Texture:
A water-based solution containing micelles (tiny oil molecules) suspended in water. Function: Gently lifts away makeup, dirt, and oil without the need for rinsing in urgent case.
Skin Type: Suitable for various skin types, including sensitive skin.
Usage: Applied to a cotton pad and swiped across the face to remove makeup; no rinsing is required in urgent case.

While all three serve the purpose of makeup removal, the choice among cleansing oil, cleansing balm, or micellar water often depends on personal preference, skin type, and the desired post-cleansing feel. Typically, cleansing oils and balms are part of a double cleansing routine, followed by a water-based cleanser, whereas micellar water is often used as a standalone cleanser or for quick makeup removal on the go without rinsing in urgent case.
